The Beginning of a New FamilyJohn Hampden Randolph was born in Nottoway County, Virginia on March 24, 1813. He lived in Virginia until his father, Judge Peter Randolph, was appointed a federal court judge in Woodville, Mississippi by President Andrew Jackson. The family moved to Mississippi.
John Hampden Randolph met his future wife, Emily Jane Liddell, in Mississippi. The couple married on December 14, 1837. Since Emily was from a wealthy family, she had a large sum of money and 20 slaves to bring to the Randolph family. The new family moved to a cotton plantation in Louisiana four years after their marriage. This was known as their Forest Home since it was surrounded by cyprus trees. They had two children when the moved to Louisiana, and would have eight more at Forest Home. Their last child came to them at the Nottotway plantation. |
The Children
John and Emily had four sons; Algernon Sidney, Moses Liddell, John Hampden Jr., and Peter Everett.

They also had eleven daughters; Elle Eugenia, Mary Augusta, Emma Jane, Cornelia, Sarah Virginia, Annie Carolina, and Julia Marceline.

The End of the New FamilyJohn Randolph died in 1883 leaving everything to his wife, Emily Jane. In 1889, when Emily was 71, she decided to sell her beautiful home. V.B. Dugas and Desire P. Landry bought the house for $50, 000. Emily divided the money between her remaining children and herself. She later died in 1904 at her son John's house.
