The Daughters
Ella Eugenia (1838-1917)
She was the oldest child. In 1861, Ella married Lovik Feltus and lived in Natchez, Mississippi with him. The couple had hard times after the Civil War, and she had to clips out prints inherited from her father to fulfill her society obligations.
Mary Augusta (1846-1914)
She married Horace E. Upton, a lawyer from New Orleans, in the White Ballroom of her Nottoway home. The couple lived in New Orleans with their six children.
Emma Jane (1848-1932)
She married Rev. Marmaduke St. James Dillon in 1870. Before his death in 1879, they had two children. Emma the married Frank Liddell Richardson, her cousin, and lived with him in New Orleans for the rest of her life.
Cornelia (1851-?)
She loved her father deeply and wrote "The White Castle of Louisiana," a diary about her life at Nottoway in 1903. She used her named and initials spelled backwards, M. R. Ailenroc, to publish this book and dedicate it to her father. She married Dr. David Gamble Murrell at the plantation.
Sarah Virginia (1853-1893)
She had an unknown disease for most of her life, and she was never married. It is believed Sarah was engaged. Usually when one was engaged, they would etch their name in a windowpane with their diamond engagement ring. Her nickname, Sally, was found etched in one of the windowpanes.
Annie Carolina (1855-1942)
She married Valle J. Rozier and had one child who died the same day. After Valle died, Annie married Stephen Miller Williams in 1895 and had one daughter with him.
Julia Marceline (1862-?)
She was the only child to be born at Nottoway. In 1883, she married Valle Rayburn from St. Louis, Missouri, at Nottoway. Before Julia was widowed in 1908, the couple had six children. She was remarried to Charles Fletcher Sparks seven years later.
